Come along and help us plant the next generation of koala food trees for Minjerribah!
This community planting day is a collaboration between Minjerribah Wildlife Veterinary and Conservation Foundation (MWVCF) and QYAC, supporting the long-term care and rehabilitation of koalas at the Straddie Vet Koala and Wildlife Triage and Rehabilitation Centre.
The trees planted will eventually provide a sustainable source of native fodder for koalas in care while they recover and prepare for release.
It takes time! These trees will need several years to grow before they are ready to harvest, so every tree we plant today is an investment in the future of koala care on Minjerribah.

On the Day
Members of the public will be able to attend and plant a koala food tree at Ganaba with assistance from volunteers to ensure trees are planted in correct species mix, the correct location with correct distancing etc
MWVCF will have a stand with information, merchandise and the opportunity to make a donation on Saturday at Quampi and Sunday at Ganaba

Tree Information
A mix of Blue Gums (Eucalyptus tereticornis), Swamp Mahogany (Eucalyptus robusta), and smaller percentage of other koala food tree species will be planted.
400 Tereticornis will be supplied by the Gourmet Gum Leaf Research Project, with funding from the QTFN. The Gourmet Gumleaves Project will be providing seedlings propagated from known favoured koala food trees.
Sibelco has collected local seed and propagated 200 E. robusta on-island and other species to contribute to this initiative.
QTFN: Supported by QTFN’s Koala Habitat Restoration Partnership Program (KHRPP). The KHRPP is funded by the Queensland Government and implemented by QTFN.
QTFN provides free koala-preferred trees and materials to support community-led koala habitat restoration events across South East Queensland.
Gourmet Gumleaves: These trees are the result of more than a decade of robust research into leaf nutrition, led by Dr Kara Youngentob, plus a fruitful collaboration between the Redland City Council as well as Indigiscapes Native Nursery. They're not genetically modified at all- simply the product of collecting seeds from the top natural performing eucalypts when it comes to nutrition (and the fewest herbivore deterrents) for endangered herbivores like koalas and greater gliders. Whilst these seedlings are still part of ongoing research to determine the nutrition level in their leaves, chances are they'll be very tasty for our fussy koalas. They'll help make the most of the areas dedicated to revegetation plantings and hopefully result in healthier koalas better able to cope with threats like disease and climate change.
