Media Coverage of the Minjerribah Koala Release

A recent milestone for wildlife care on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) has been featured in the Redland City Minute, highlighting the successful release of a rehabilitated koala back into its natural habitat on the island.

The release marks an important step forward for wildlife veterinary care and conservation on Minjerribah, demonstrating what is now possible through on-island veterinary triage, treatment and rehabilitation.

For many years, injured koalas from Minjerribah needed to travel to mainland wildlife hospitals for treatment. While essential for their care, returning them safely to the island population hasn’t been possible due to biosecurity considerations.

With the establishment of on-island wildlife veterinary services and specialist rehabilitation approvals, koalas can now be treated locally and, where clinically appropriate, returned to their home habitat on Quandamooka Country.

The Minjerribah Wildlife Veterinary and Conservation Foundation, established in 2026, supports this work by helping sustain veterinary triage, treatment, rehabilitation, and conservation programs that protect the island’s unique wildlife populations.

This milestone reflects the collaboration of veterinarians, wildlife carers, volunteers and the broader community working together to strengthen wildlife care and conservation outcomes on Minjerribah.
